Rallycross hero Ohman set for return at Holjes with Volkswagen Polo
)
Mats Ohman will make a much-anticipated return to the discipline with two major events in the space of a week, driving a 600bhp Volkswagen Polo RX1.
Fan favourite Ohman will return to the grid for his home round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship at Holjes from July 5-6, located in the forests of the Varmland region, where he will compete in the FIA European Rallycross Championship RX1 category.
Ohman – who drives with hand controls due to being paralysed from the waist down after breaking his back in a snowmobile accident in 1998 – will race a Kristoffersson Motorsport-built Volkswagen Polo 601, run by the JC Raceteknik squad.
The Swedish driver, who is a front-runner and race winner in the RallyX series, set fastest overall times in his home round of the championship last year racing an Audi S1. In the build-up to the Magic Weekend in Hǒljes, he'll be racing in RallyX this coming weekend.
He has recently tested the newly-acquired Polo to gain experience of the new-to-him chassis, while also developing his unique hand control system.
Ohman was unable to race at his home round of the European Rallycross Championship at Holjes last year due to issues with the adaptions made to his previous car, but following positive work with the FIA Safety Department and Disability and Accessibility Commission, everything is in place for him to compete at the annual ‘Magic Weekend’ this time around.

Joel Christoffersson, JC Raceteknik Team Principal: “We are delighted to be side-by-side with Mats in his return to rallycross. There were plans to possibly start an event earlier in the year, but we have all worked hard, in collaboration with Mats and KMS [Kristoffersson Motorsport], to get the Polo to his liking and everything in place to do it in the right way.
"Mats’ workshop is so close to Alvsbyn that he really wants to drive there and I think the Polo and Mats will go very well at that circuit. Just a few days later, it will be a very special return to the Magic Weekend for us all as a team, together with Mats. We have come to a good solution together with the FIA and Mats’ car is legal to drive now, which I am sure the fans will enjoy very much too. Very few people have as much passion for this as Mats does, and it’s my pleasure to have him in JC Raceteknik.”
